The pandemic was a dark day for America and for Ohio. While fear gripped the nation and the state, the Ohio legislature allowed the Governor to unilaterally seize emergency powers. There is no argument that the governor abused these emergency powers by suspending due process and the equal application of the law. The Ohio Governor suspending law, even during times of an emergency, is specifically prohibited by the Ohio Constitution. Suspending laws during a time of emergency is exclusively reserved to the Ohio legislature.
Just as FDR used executive order 9066 during WWII to imprison Japanese Americans without due process was wrong and done out of fear, so too were the actions of Governor DeWine. What was worse, in this case was that even when Ohio representatives were able to meet and conduct business the Governor refused to cede power back to the Ohio legislature. We must learn from our history or we are condemned to repeat it.
Never again will we support the Governor wielding exclusive use of emergency powers and never again shall the Governor be allowed to suspend any law without the approval of the Ohio legislature.
